St. George marks opening of new airport

ST. GEORGE -- Enthusiasm is flying high in a southern Utah city after the opening of a
new airport designed to handle commercial jet flights.

St. George Mayor Daniel McArthur declared, "Whoop-de-doo, it's finally true!" at opening
ceremonies at the St. George Municipal Airport.

The Spectrum of St. George reports McArthur called it a great day for the history of St.
George, and compared the Wednesday opening to the completion of Interstate 15.

The freeway links the city in Washington County with Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.

SkyWest Airlines has begun scheduling flights to the new airport.

The $160 million facility replaces a dated city landing strip atop a mesa that officials say
was prone to crosswinds and didn't meet Federal Aviation Administration safety
standards.
